The Delegation Line Every Solo Lawyer Must Cross
Why endurance, authenticity, and confident pricing determine who actually scales
It is 2026, and if you are serious about building the book of business you actually want, you cannot treat business development and firm operations like an afterthought. That is the core mission behind BE THAT LAWYER, and it is exactly why my conversation with Deirdre Nero mattered so much.
Deirdre and I connected through a true small world moment. A mutual friend introduced us, and it later turned out that Deirdre is married to one of my long time roundtable members, Eric. Once we started talking, it became clear she had lived through the exact lessons most solo lawyers learn the hard way, and she was willing to share them honestly.
Her quote for the show came from Nelson Mandela, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” That line perfectly captures her journey.
Action Can Precede Clarity
Deirdre launched her firm in 2009, during one of the toughest economic periods to start any business. At the same time, she was navigating a painful divorce, starting a new job at a major immigration firm, and dealing with a severe flare up of alopecia areata that caused her to lose all her hair.
There was no grand plan. There was no perfect timing. She took action because standing still was not an option. What began as a temporary move to serve existing clients became a long term firm that has now been operating for nearly two decades.
For lawyers who keep waiting until everything feels settled, this is a reminder. Momentum does not come from certainty. It comes from movement.
Growth Requires Delegation, Not Endurance
Like many solos, Deirdre tried to do everything herself. Immigration law is paperwork heavy, process driven, and detail intensive, which made that approach especially unsustainable. She handled intake, consultations, filings, marketing, admin, and follow up, all while trying to grow the firm.
Eventually, she hit the same ceiling most solo lawyers hit. There is only so far you can go when every task runs through you. The breakthrough came when she started building a real team, beginning with paralegals to handle documentation and client coordination, then administrative support, law clerks, and eventually another lawyer.
Delegation did not just reduce stress. It unlocked growth. It created space for leadership, strategy, and business development. That is the delegation line every solo lawyer must cross if they want a firm that works without consuming them.
Authenticity Builds Trust and Authority
Deirdre also shared how personal authenticity shaped her leadership. Losing her hair forced her to confront identity, visibility, and vulnerability, especially as the face of her firm. Early on, she tried to separate her personal reality from her professional brand.
That changed when she became active with the National Alopecia Areata Foundation and began advocating publicly. Instead of hiding, she integrated her story into who she was as a lawyer and leader. She hosted fundraisers, invited business contacts, and showed up as a whole person.
Clients and referral partners respond to that kind of authenticity. Perfection creates distance. Honesty builds connection.
Expertise Must Be Valued to Be Sustainable
One of the most practical shifts Deirdre made was around pricing. A sales coach challenged her to stop giving away high level consultations for free. Immigration consultations are complex, individualized, and strategic. Treating that work as unpaid erodes both confidence and profitability.
Charging for consultations changed how clients showed up and how Deirdre valued her own expertise. It was not just a financial decision. It was a positioning decision. Sustainable practices require confident pricing.
When I asked Deirdre about her biggest mistake, she did not hesitate. Trying to do everything herself. Close behind was waiting too long to hire another lawyer. Both delayed growth and freedom.
