Sometimes the biggest shifts in life and business do not come from strategy. They come from perspective. In my conversation with Susan Filan, a former prosecutor, MSNBC legal analyst, and now transformational speaker, we explored what happens when life forces you to rethink everything you thought mattered.
Susan’s journey is not theoretical. It is grounded in real experience, including a near fatal accident that changed how she views success, purpose, and what it means to truly live. For lawyers caught in the daily grind, her insights offer a powerful reminder that growth is not just about career advancement. It is about how you experience your life along the way.
For lawyers pushing through long hours and constant pressure, this conversation opens the door to a different way of thinking about success.
Success Without Awareness Can Lead You Off Track
Many lawyers follow a familiar path. Work harder, bill more hours, chase the next title, and keep moving forward. It becomes automatic. You get results, recognition, and financial reward.
But there is often very little reflection.
Susan spent decades operating at a high level in law and media. From the outside, everything looked successful. But like many high performers, she was focused on achievement without stopping to ask whether the path she was on truly aligned with what mattered most.
That disconnect is more common than most lawyers want to admit.
When Life Forces A Wake-Up Call
Everything changed for Susan in an instant. A serious accident left her physically broken and facing a long recovery. In that moment, the focus shifted away from career and toward something much more fundamental.
She was alive.
When you are in that position, you are not thinking about your next case or your next promotion. You are thinking about breathing, about being here, and about what your life actually means.
That level of clarity is difficult to access in everyday life, but it is also something lawyers do not need to wait for a crisis to experience.
Why Lawyers Stay On The Hamster Wheel
Despite knowing something is off, many lawyers continue pushing forward. They tell themselves they will make changes later. Later when things calm down. Later when they reach a certain level. Later when they feel more secure.
The problem is that later keeps getting pushed further away.
Susan framed it in a simple way. Ask yourself where you are out of integrity with your own life. Where are you overriding your instincts, your health, or your priorities just to keep up?
Most lawyers already know the answer. They just avoid confronting it.
The Power Of Asking Better Questions
Two questions came out of this conversation that every lawyer should consider.
What would you do if you were not afraid?
And just as important, what would your future self thank you for doing today?
These questions cut through the noise. They highlight the gap between what you are doing now and what you actually want to be doing. They also expose how often fear is the real reason behind inaction.
When lawyers take the time to answer these honestly, it becomes much harder to justify staying stuck.
You Cannot Delay Happiness Until Later
A common mindset in the legal profession is that happiness comes after achievement. After the promotion, after the financial milestone, after everything is finally in place.
Susan challenged that directly.
If you are not happy now, those external wins are not going to fix it. They may change your circumstances, but they will not change how you experience your life.
I have seen this firsthand. Early in my career, I chased bigger income and bigger goals, only to realize that many people who had already reached those levels were not any more fulfilled.
That realization forces a shift. You stop chasing everything and start focusing on what actually matters, family, health, time, and control over your life.
Finding Peace In The Middle Of Pressure
Lawyers operate in high pressure environments. Deadlines, clients, and expectations create constant stress. It becomes easy to believe that peace is something you get once everything settles down.
In reality, it works the opposite way.
Susan emphasized the importance of building internal stability regardless of what is happening externally. That can come from simple actions, stepping away from constant input, taking a walk, or giving yourself time to think without distraction.
When you reconnect with what brings you genuine joy, you create a foundation that is not dependent on external outcomes.
That is where real control begins.
Susan Filan’s Biggest Mistake
When I asked Susan about her biggest mistake, her answer had nothing to do with a legal case or a career move.
She spent years trying to be someone she thought she needed to be in order to succeed.
She adjusted her behavior, her style, and how she showed up to fit expectations instead of trusting her natural instincts. In doing that, she held herself back from fully using her strengths.
This is something I see with lawyers all the time. They try to fit into a mold instead of leaning into what makes them different.
That difference is often exactly what helps them build stronger relationships, stand out in the market, and grow their business.
Closing Thoughts
You do not need a life altering event to rethink your path.
You can make that decision today by being honest about what is working and what is not. If something feels off, it probably is. If something matters, it deserves your attention now, not later.
Success is not just about what you build in your career. It is about how you experience your life while you are building it.
And the lawyers who understand that sooner are the ones who end up with both.
